Most Mass. residents are not married, new survey shows

Marriage rate has been declining since 1970s

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – The Bureau of Labor Statistics says that more than half of adults in the U.S. are now single. The Martin Prosperity Institute studied that data, and discovered that among the 50 states, Massachusetts has some of the highest rates of unmarried people in the country.

The amount of couples getting married has actually been declining since 1976.

The report ranks Massachusetts 8th in the nation for its share of single adults. Louisiana ranked number one, Rhode Island number two, and New York number three.

Julie Williams of New York told 22News that nowadays, there is a high demand for perfection.

“Society, like in movies, everybody thinks they want to have the perfect relationship with no fighting. But that’s never going to happen because everyone has their disagreements and arguments,” Williams said.

The report found that 53% percent of adults in Massachusetts are single. Among the six New England states, New Hampshire had the highest percentage of adults who are married.
