IPSWICH, Mass. (AP) — A second woman struck by lightning at a Massachusetts beach earlier this month has died.
Ipswich police announced Monday that 69-year-old Marianne Mellnick of Concord died on Saturday at Massachusetts General Hospital.
Mellnick was one of two women struck by lightning Sept. 6 on Crane Beach in Ipswich as severe thunderstorms moved through the area. Police say they were not in the water, but were walking up the beach, toward the street.
Sixty-one-year-old Marguerite Tomany, of Thompson, Connecticut, died last week.
Neither woman had a pulse when emergency personnel reached the beach. They were revived before being taken the hospital.
Acting Police Chief Jonathan Hubbard called the deaths “a terrible tragedy.”
