Protesters: Building is a hazard

Some locals want building to be demolished

HOLYOKE, Mass. (WWLP) – Some residents and business owners protested outside of the abandoned Essex House at 400 High Street in Holyoke Friday.

Protesters say the former hotel is in bad shape and is a public hazard. Some local business owners even say the Essex House is having a negative impact on businesses in the area.

“I’m hoping that we can make a difference in trying to have people to come down here and clean up these old buildings. These old buildings are really falling. People are getting hurt,” said Vivian Vazquez, a former Holyoke resident for 14 years.

The protesters want the city council president and finance committee to put the money up to demolish the crumbling building.
