WALES, Mass. (WWLP) – Michael Valanzola will be the Republican Party’s candidate for the state senate seat long held by retiring Senator Stephen Brewer. With all precincts reporting in the Worcester, Hampden, Hampshire, and Middlesex District, Valanzola has 4,599 votes, ahead of James Ehrhard with 3,111.
With his win Tuesday, Valanzola will go on to face State Rep. Anne Gobi (D-Spencer) in the November general election. The six-term representative is leaving the house to seek the seat long held by Brewer, a Barre Democrat who has been in the Legislature for nearly 35 years.
Both Valanzola and Ehrhard are members of the Tantasqua Regional School Committee. Valanzola, a former Wales selectman, is the committee’s chairperson. Ehrhard is an attorney who lives in Sturbridge.
Geographically one of the largest districts in the state, the Worcester, Hampden, Hampshire, and Middlesex incorporates parts of central and western Massachusetts. The district includes nearly all of western Worcester County, plus the towns of Brimfield, Holland, Monson, Palmer, and Wales in Hampden County, the town of Ware in Hampshire County, and the town of Ashby in Middlesex County.
