SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – 22News is projecting that Jose Tosado will be the Democratic party’s candidate to represent the 9th Hampden District this November. In a three way race Tosado came out ahead of Peter Murphy and Ed Collins for the party’s nomination in the Springfield-based district.
With 94% of precincts reporting, Tosado received 43% of the vote, to Murphy’s 32% and Collins’ 26%. Tosado will now go on to face independent Robert Underwood in the November election. There is no declared Republican candidate in the race.
All three Democratic candidates have been active in Springfield politics, with Tosado having been City Council president and an unsuccessful candidate for mayor in 2011. Murphy is a member of the Springfield School Committee, while Collins has been a leader in organized labor.
