New state police drug lab in Springfield

SPRINGFIELD Mass. (WWLP) – State police unveiled a new state police drug lab in Springfield Tuesday, that law enforcement said will expedite the drug testing process.

Once fully online, the facility on Carando Drive will perform drug identification and certification for criminal drug samples. It will begin to work through the backlog of cases that accumulated after a lab in Amherst closed down two years ago.

David Sullivan, Northwestern’s District Attorney said the lab will save a lot of time. “It means that all our law enforcement agencies, whether it’s Massachusetts State Police or local police, now have this facility in their backyard so they can be efficient, not wasting time traveling into Boston,” he said.

Earlier this year, a former chemist at the state crime lab in Amherst pleaded guilty to stealing controlled substances from the lab. Officials said the employees of the new lab will be held to strict standards.
