Woman bicyclist struck on Route 202 in Belchertown

Bike was hit in front of police station

Belchertown car bicycle accident 1BELCHERTOWN, Mass. (WWLP) – A 63-year-old Belchertown woman suffered serious injuries when a car hit the bicycle she was riding on Route 202 in Belchertown Tuesday afternoon.

Belchertown Police closed a section of Rt. 202 right in front of the Belchertown Police station where the accident occurred around 4:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Northwestern District Attorney spokeswoman Mary Carey told 22News the victim was struck by a Hyundai Accent being driven by an 80-year-old Belchertown woman as the bicyclist was crossing Route 202 in front of the Belchertown Police Department.

Carey said the woman was wearing a helmet and was rushed to Baystate Medical Center. Live video broadcast during 22News at 6:00 p.m. showed windshield damage to the Hyundai.

Carey said in a statement, “The incident is under investigation by Belchertown Police, Massachusetts State Police assigned to the Northwestern District Attorney’s Office and the Massachusetts State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section (CARS).”

Police had closed off a portion of Route 202 in front of the police station. Belchertown Police Sgt. Bruce Jenks told 22News the road was reopened around 7:30 p.m.

Sgt. Jenks added that the Belchertown woman is expected to survive from her injuries. No charges have been filed at this time.
