Old Springfield apartments get a new look

The property has 280 units in many buildings

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – The Morgan Square Apartments on Main Street will soon be known as the Silverbrick Lofts. The property has 280 units in many buildings, surrounding a courtyard.

22News got a tour of the renovations. Many units still have residents in them, so the 6-million dollar renovations are beginning with the empty apartments.

Fifteen are expected to be done by November of this year. They are market-rate housing, and city leaders said they want to see young professionals and empty-nesters move back downtown.

Kevin Kennedy, the Springfield Chief Development Officer, told 22News, “We have to make sure that it’s something that’s attractive to people and we’re going in that direction. Remember, part of the host community agreement on the MGM situation is the complete surveillance and security in the downtown. We’re going in that direction.”

The apartments are a couple blocks from where the new Union Station will be, and in the other direction will be the MGM resort and casino if voters decide it can be built downtown.
