Northampton residents fear change to their neighborhood

Many share concerns for heavy traffic and utility changes

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. (WWLP) – Northampton’s City Council approved zoning law changes last year that would allow large scale developments. On Wednesday, local residents crowded a City Hall room to fight against what they say could change their neighborhoods forever.

City Councilor Ryan O’Donnel held the public meeting to hear his constituent’s complaints. Many shared the same concerns, heavy traffic, new access roads, and changes to their utilities.

Stephen Hathawaui of Northampton told 22News, “We are more concerned that development in our neighborhood is along the same lines of development in our existing neighborhood.”

This is the first major change to the city’s residential zoning in three decades. Wednesday’s meeting was one of many on the issues to address new concerns and set new rules.
