Northampton’s the place to be for Jazz lovers this week. The Fourth annual Northampton Jazz Festival started Tuesday night with a performance at the Loft at the Clarion Hotel.
Festival music coordinator and jazz pianist Paul Arslanian told 22News that Jazz is an American art form that originated in the USA about 100 years ago. He said it’s considered, lively, community-based, and improvisational.
“It incorporates a lot of cultures and styles and improvisation. And we feel like it’s a very important part of the fabric of this country. It should be kept alive,” said Arslanian.
Tuesday night’s 2014 Northampton Jazz Festival kickoff at the Clarion featured a performance by vocalist Giacomo Gates.
There are several more festival events planned for this week, including “Jazz and Food Nights” on Wednesday and Thursday.
The Jazz Festival is supported by sponsors and patrons of the Arts, and admission is free to everyone.
