Boater in hot water after fireworks display near Logan runway

BOSTON (WPRI) — A boater lighting off an impromptu fireworks show near Logan Airport ended up under arrest in Boston Monday night.

Massachusetts State Police said Steven A. Hines, 52 of Winthrop was setting off fireworks from a boat near Runway 33R.

Police said members of the agency’s Marine Unit stopped the vessel around 5:45 p.m. in a Boston Harbor inlet between Winthrop and the airport, arrested Hines and seized a large bag containing fireworks.

While police said the man’s actions posed no threat or danger to any flights arriving or departing from Logan, it is illegal in Massachusetts to sell, possess or use fireworks.

Hines was booked at State Police Barracks at Logan Airport on charges of unlawful possession of fireworks and two equipment violations. In addition, police said Hines was found to be the subject of an active warrant.
