Be prepared before disaster strikes

GREENFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – September is Emergency Preparedness Month and 22News is working for you with some helpful reminders to keep you safe in the event of a disaster.

Among the situational factors to keep in account, one should have the following in order:

  1.  Awareness of emergency alert systems
  2. A plan of where and how to reunite with family if ever separated
  3. Supplies in order to be self sufficient for at least three days.

Such supplies one should have on hand include:

  • A gallon of water
  • Flashlight
  • Extra batteries
  • Non-perishable food
  • Manual can opener
  • First aid supplies

Benjamin Goldsher of Erving told 22News that he likes to plan ahead in case of emergencies.

“I think it’s very important to be aware of what you have around your house and have some good items to keep yourself safe,” he said.

Also, if possible, consider having a mobile emergency kit by having some extra gasoline and a way to charge your cell phone in your car.

Plans should be reviewed regularly so you know what to do in the event of a disaster.
