LUDLOW, Mass. (WWLP) – The streets of Ludlow were supposed to be lit Sunday night with candles, but the rain had other ideas.
About 20,000 people came to the Our Lady of Fatima Church in Ludlow for a mass that was to be followed by a procession through the streets holding a candle. It’s a tradition that dates back centuries in Portugal, and it’s been recreated here every year for the past 66 years, but with the weather, it had to be cancelled.
Michael Burke, Music Director at Our Lady of Fatima, told 22News, “Due to the weather, Mother Nature and Mother Mary not being cooperative with us, we had to go into the church during the communion and we cancelled the procession. Too much lightning and too much storming.”
Parishioners and visitors told 22News they can’t wait to try again next year. They say it’s a great way for to express their Portuguese pride, and devotion to God.
