New protections for student athletes in effect

HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — A Connecticut senator is reminding parents and students about new laws designed to protect athletes from concussions and sudden cardiac arrest.

One of Sen. Dante Bartolomeo’s laws calls for the training of coaches on identifying and treating concussions. The Connecticut Interscholastic Athletic Conference says all public, private and parochial schools it oversees will begin implementing the trainings this fall.

Another law establishes a sudden cardiac arrest awareness program. Coaches, parents and athletes will get information on warning signs, the risks of playing through it, treatment and how to determine when it’s safe to return to play.

The legislation was inspired in part by the death of Andy Pena of Darien, who died of sudden cardiac arrest in 2011 at 14. His family didn’t know he had a chronic heart condition.
