Traveling cheap during the fall

Tickets can be as low as 10%-30% less than summer fares

CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) –  Autumn is the best season of the year to fly, since fares are much lower than in the summer time and there are also fewer crowds. 22News is working for you with tips on how you can save some cash when planning your trips this autumn.

Fall travel season already began on August 25th, and will go until about mid-November. During these months, you’ll see airfare prices drop anywhere between 10% to 30%. Prices of tickets this fall, however, will be 2%-3% more expensive compared to last year.

Sue Colo, a travel services manager, told 22News September is the best month to fly during the fall season.

“September is probably one of the nicest times of the year,” says Colo. “The weather tends to be nice in all the locations across the U.S. and also in Europe, and there’s not a lot of people. So it’s a great time to travel. In September, fares tend to be lower, it’s an off-season.”

The best days to purchase tickets are Tuesday at 3:00 p.m. EST, when they are usually the cheapest. Tickets should be bought at least 30 days before departure, but should not be bought earlier than 3 months ahead. The only exception to buying tickets as soon as possible is during the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays.

Colo also says there are certain days during the week that travelers should fly.

“Typically the best days of the week to travel are Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday. Mondays and Fridays, you have a lot of business people traveling. Sunday nights, a lot of them are headed out for the week, so you want to try and stay away from those days.”

Usually, the cheapest flights are those with stop-overs, but beware of stopovers during the winter: depending on where you land, you could be delayed because of weather conditions.
