HOLYOKE, Mass. (WWLP) – Construction on I-91 has been a bit of a hassle for drivers this summer, but it is not expected to go away any time soon.
Drivers have seen construction between exits 15 and 17 on I-91 all summer long, including on Cherry Street/ Route 202 off of exit 16. The Massachusetts Department of Transportation said on Tuesday that this construction will last for at least another season, and isn’t expected to be finished until summer 2015.
The MassDot is rebuilding and resurfacing the lanes on the highway in those areas, and has temporarily closed some lanes for the construction.
Drivers should be aware of is how narrow the roads are in these areas with marked detours and construction signs. 22News spoke with a few drivers who are concerned when they drive through these spaces.
“I think it’s dangerous, because all of a sudden you shift over to the right, you shift over to the left, people are going over 70 miles an hour, that’s kind of scary,” says Mary Rodriguez if Holyoke.
When you drive through these zones, be sure to slow down and leave plenty of space between you and the car ahead of you.
The most common accidents that have happened are rear end collisions.
Construction on Cherry Street is scheduled to be completed sometime in 2016.
