HOLYOKE, Mass. (WWLP) – Police are investigating two shootings in Holyoke that happened early Tuesday morning. 22News spoke to residents and business owners who were shaken up.
It was not a typical start to a Tuesday morning for Aleck Rucki, co-owner of Rucki and Son Tire shop on South Canal Street in Holyoke. Rucki said, “One of the workers told me that somebody went through the fence. Then the police came and told me what happened, I was shocked.”
Holyoke Police told him a white van crashed through the yard of tires outside his shop, and inside was the body of a 31-year-old Hector Marrero of Springfield. He was dead. This man was the second gunshot victim police found within minutes, and only two blocks away from the first.
According to Holyoke Police, the first victim was found on South Bridge Street. Lt. Jim Albert told 22News that victim is a 25-year-old man from Chicopee. He was taken to Baystate Medical Center with serious injuries, but is expected to survive. Lt. Albert also said investigators found several bullet shell casings on South Bridge Street.
One father who lives just up the road from where residents heard those gun shots fired told 22News he’s concerned for his son’s safety. “I’m afraid to go out anywhere out in this area. I’m frustrated. I’m very frustrated because of all the shootings that are going on,” Eric Phakos said.
