Staying safe in construction zones

Several road work in western Mass. this week

WEST SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Bumpy rides caused by potholes and deteriorating roads can cost you a lot of money.
Paving work can solve that problem, but they can also cause headaches.

“I have to pay extra for maintenance of my car. Every where it’s always road blockage, detouring, constructions going on,” Dimple Kanadia of Agawam said.

This week, in Springfield, drivers will see road work on Boston Road near the Eastfield Mall and on Belmont Avenue from Locust Street to Woodside Terrace. In West Springfield, crews will re-pave a portion of Piper Road near Morgan Road, and in Florence, crews will work on Main and North Main Streets.

However, you need to be careful near those work zones, to avoid getting into an accident.

“Especially for drivers that aren’t from the area, that aren’t familiar with the roads, it can be a problem,” Joe Fiorentino of Agawam said.

There are about 800 deadly accidents every year across the country. Drivers need to slow down. If you’re caught speeding in an active work zone, your fine will double. So to avoid tickets and to avoid accidents, you should slow down when you’re driving near a construction site.

Also, expect the unexpected. Traffic lanes can change, and pedestrians may be walking near or on the road.
