Police: Suspect arrested with 21 lbs. of pot in trunk

NEW BEDFORD, Mass. (WPRI) – Police arrest a man accused of driving through New Bedford with 21 pounds of marijuana in the trunk of his car.

Members of the city’s Organized Crime Intelligence Bureau received information that Jose Maldonado of Providence would be delivering a large amount of marijuana to the north end of New Bedford.

On Friday, Aug. 15, they observed the 45-year-old operating a vehicle in the area of Belleville Avenue and Phillips Avenue.

Narcotics detectives stopped Maldonado and searched his vehicle. In the trunk, they found large plastic bags containing marijuana weighing a total of 21 pounds. The drugs had a street value of more than $40,000.

Maldonado was charged with possession with intent to distribute marijuana. He’s has already been convicted this offense before.
