No bail for former C.O. charged with murder

Timothy Levesque

SWANSEA, Mass. (WPRI) – A former correctional officer was ordered held without bail on Monday, after police said he allegedly shot and killed a young woman early Sunday morning.

According to a spokesperson for the Bristol County District Attorney’s Office, Swansea police responded to Ocean Grove Avenue shortly after 1:30 a.m. after receiving several 911 calls that a body was in the roadway.

When police arrived they found Melissa White, 23, lying in the street with a gunshot wound to the chest. She was rushed to Rhode Island Hospital and died a short time later.

Timothy Levesque, 56, was arrested on scene and faces charges of murder and assault and battery.

In court on Monday, a prosecutor painted a picture of chaos out on the streets in connection with a dispute between two groups of young men. One group included sons of the accused, while Melissa White was with the other group of young men.

Defense attorneys argued that Levesque shot and killed White in self defense because she came at him with a crowbar.

The Bristol County District Attorney’s Office confirmed that Levesque is a retired correctional officer.
