SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – The Springfield chapter of the Buffalo Soldiers Motorcycle Club made certain Sunday that many children begin their school year on a positive note.
On the day before school stars up again, the children at the Colonial Estate Apartments were waiting as the Buffalo Soldiers came with backpacks and hamburgers. It’s become an annual visit, and this year perhaps, even more urgent.
“The need for school supplies, with the school budgets, they don’t have enough supplies; trying to help out by giving supplies to the kids,” said Springfield chapter President Richard Gardner. “Actually there are twice as many as last year.”
Grateful parents told 22News how eager their children are to greet the Buffalo Soldiers, and how important the club members are and what a positive effect these visitors have on the children’s morale.
Springfield parent Cynthia Blackwood said, “Sometimes children don’t have to get these things, I think it’s fantastic. The bike riders, they’re being together, they really enjoy doing this.”
Lauren Driscoll of Springfield said, “They come out to the community, they help the kids with school supplies, they’re wonderful. They do this every year.”
And at the end of the day the children at this housing complex remember what the Buffalo Soldiers Motorcycle Club means to them. They can be certain the club members will come calling again just before the start of school next year.
