METHUEN, Mass. (AP) — A Lowell police officer faces charges including motor vehicle homicide and drunken driving following an overnight accident that killed a Lawrence man.

Police said a Land Rover driven by 41-year-old Eric Wayne apparently crossed a dividing line on Route 110 in Methuen shortly after midnight Saturday and collided with a car traveling in the opposite direction. The driver of the second car, 26-year-old Briant Paula, was pronounced dead at a hospital.

Wayne, who was off-duty, refused medical treatment and was arrested at the scene.

A spokeswoman for the Essex District Attorney’s office said the officer was ordered held on $500,000 bail pending his arraignment in district court on Monday.

A telephone listing for Wayne could not be located and it was not known if he had retained an attorney.
