(CNN) – An army veteran from Colorado is at the tail end of a big challenge. He started a solo run across the country last year and is on track to finish next month.
There are a lot quicker ways to get to Virginia Beach, but Jim Shiew says running across America is how he plans to do it.
He said, “I dreamt about doing it and lost a lot of sleep over it, and finally was able to and then realized I better do it, or it might be too late.”
He started running November first in Buena Vista, Colorado to raise funds for the Special Operations Warrior Foundation, a Florida non-profit supporting military forces and their families.
Jim says it’s an organization near and dear to his heart. “They only take 5 percent of whatever is given, so that’s just unheard of in a non-profit.”
He runs no less than 12 miles a day and believes he’s mapped out the perfect running plan. “Drive the van forward a couple miles, run back pick up the car, drive it to the van, then move the van forward again. I just kind of follow myself.”
It’s a process that might sound a little impractical to those he’s met along the way.
He said, “I tell everyone I’m going east running west.”
But Shiew wants to make it known that the purpose of this run isn’t just about him. “It’s very important that we take care of our vets, because they’re not being properly taken care of, and they need a lot of help.”
Shiew says the places he’s seen and the people he’s met have truly made this a once in a lifetime experience.
Shiew says if he keeps his pace, he should make it to Virginia Beach by September 24.
