NORTHAMPTON, Mass. (WWLP) – Drivers in Northampton will have to deal with a highway on-ramp closure for at least another two months.
Mike Verseckes of the state Department of Transportation says that the ramp from Route 5 to I-91 Northbound (at Exit 18) will be closed for six to eight weeks. Crews have been working to repair the deteriorating overpass above Route 5. The initial work was completed in July, but another inspection found more deterioration on the overpass where it crosses the railroad tracks.
One driver told 22News that the closing doesn’t bother him.
“It’s not an inconvenience for me, because I go right by it and get off at Exit 21,” Jeff Robinson of Monson said. “I feel strongly that if you are going to do it, you might as well do it right. No matter how long it takes.”
The on-ramp will stay closed because MassDOT says there’s not enough room to keep two lanes of travel and have cars merging onto the highway.
