Northampton executive order to help undocumented immigrants

Immigrants would be able to ask police for help

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. (WWLP) – A meeting was held in Northampton, Thursday night, with a goal of helping undocumented immigrants feel safer in the community.

Northampton Mayor David Narkewicz committed to signing an executive order next week. That order aims to break through language barriers between residents and police, by creating more translation services.

Bliss Requa-Trautz of Holyoke told 22News, “The statements by the Mayor and the Chief of Police and their citizen advocate are an important step in showing the community that they can trust local law enforcement, and they can work together in the community where they live and work.”

The order would also exempt Northampton police from having to comply with immigration department holds. That means an undocumented immigrant would be able to ask police for help, or provide information, without the fear being deported.
