New technology aims to “un-distract” drivers

WEST SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – New technology promises to prevent future crashes by gaining the attention of distracted drivers. An issue Ed Youmell, a father from Wilbraham, says he’s too familiar with.

“When you have young kids and they’re always yelling, hey dad from the backseat, and you try not to turn around but every once in a while you do,” he said.

Eighty percent of car accidents are due to the driver being distracted. So to prevent this, the radar technology will warn you if you’re drifting out of your lane or if an objects coming too close to your vehicle. Miguel Humphreys, a sales associate at Balise in West Springfield told 22News that’s not all.

“It actually has a forward collision warning system also, that if you get distracted by something and to close to a vehicle, not only does it beep but there are actually soft yellow lights that hit your peripherals too,” he said.

The technology is built into high end, luxury cars, a company called SafeDrive Systems created a radar drivers can buy and attach themselves. It’s not in Massachusetts yet, and if it were, drivers like Yahia Chaoui, wouldn’t be willing to invest.

“For me I don’t get distracted if I have a message or something I usually don’t answer it or I have to stop. It’s safer for me and for everybody else,” he said.

Distractions usually happen just 3 seconds before a crash.
