Farmer’s markets increasing in popularity

Farmer's markets have increased 76 percent since 2008

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. (WWLP) – You see them driving down the road, bumper stickers that say Buy Locally Grown and its not just a slogan, it’s changing people’s shopping habits.

New data from the U.S. Department of Agriculture shows that there’s more farmer’s markets than ever before.  The National Farmers Market directory lists more than 8,200, an increase of 76% since 2008.

On Wednesday there was a farmer’s market in Florence that featured locally grown fresh produce from farms in Easthampton, Westhampton, Williamsburg and Plainfield.

The founder of the farmer’s market told 22News she’s seen it become more popular. “We started in 1993 and we had three vendors. We are up to 10 vendors now and that because that it all we have room for. We have a waiting list. We have to grow it in order to sell it, and that’s what people love,” Cynthia Tobin said.

They also sell herbs, meant and dairy products.  To find a farmer’s market near you click here.
