SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – A lot of support for a movement to stop violence and help kids do better in School in Springfield was held Wednesday night.
Hundreds of Springfield school children attended a community back-to-school forum at the Chestnut accelerated Middle School.
Armando Olivares from the Mayor’s Violence Prevention Task Force wanted to inspire the kids to do well this school year, and give them an opportunity to shine.
“We have young people taking a leadership role. Usually young people don’t make the news for good things. Young people are showcased through the news for all the bad going on in the city, so it feels good to have young people come together and young people being showcased tonight,” said Armandio Oliveras.
One hundred kids at Wednesday night’s rally went home with new backpacks, that were given away free.
Olivares hopes to get parents more involved with their children’s academic success.
