The baby, who has been identified as Zaniyah Calloway, was first transported by Bristol EMS to Bristol Hospital with a severe laceration to her midsection. LifeStar then transported the baby to Connecticut Children’s Medical Center in Hartford, where she was pronounced dead.

During the investigation it was learned that Hapgood was babysitting Zaniyah at the time of the incident. Police are trying to figure out a motive for this crime.

It was a loud and rowdy scene, as neighbors said they heard the shouts coming from the house, and they went out to look.

“Somebody was holding the child, and it was just lots of chaos. You could just hear everybody screaming, ‘Call the ambulance!’ ‘Call the parents!’ It was just really, really worrying,” one neighbor said.

“The suspect came out, complied with all of our orders, he was taken into custody,” said Lieutenant Kevin Morrell of the Bristol Police Department.

A detective on the scene also said Hapgood was naked when he was arrested and it appears his injuries were self-inflicted, possibly accidental.
