What caused a water main break in Chicopee?

The transmission main was built decades ago.

CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) –  Montgomery Street in Chicopee re-opened after a 12-hour repair to a broken water main. Hundreds of people in the Aldenville neighborhood went all day with no running water.

Chicopee Water Superintendent Alan Starzyk told 22News it may take a while to find out what caused the water pipe to break, but he noted that the transmission main was built seven or eight decades ago.

“I’m anticipating that, seeing how the age of the pipe is anywhere from 70 to 80 years old, it’s probably the age of the pipe,” said Starzyk.

Impacted neighbors should have water back by now, and an important reminder when there’s a water main break, always test the faucet with cold water, not hot water.

When the water re-runs through an empty main, it could pick up sediment, and you don’t want any debris getting in your hot water system.
