Savage Arms to lay off 95 workers

Savage Arms laid off 37 workers in April

WESTFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – 22News is following Breaking News out of Westfield, where 95 workers will be laid off.

ATK Sporting, the parent company of Savage Arms announced they will downsize their workforce.

This is their second round of layoffs in less than a year. In April of this year, 37 employees were handed pink slips.

Savage Arms is one of the world’s largest manufacturers of hunting rifles and shotguns. They’ve been making them for more than 100 years.

The company will also lay off 25 employees at their other facility in Lakefield, Ontario.

In a statement sent to 22News, company President Jay Tibbets said, “Calendar year 2014 represented the industry’s single largest growth year in history, largely driven by consumer surge buying. We responded to that demand by increasing production capacity and expanding our workforce. Unfortunately, we must now right size our operations to remain efficient and competitive as consumer demand retracts.”
