Man died after fall from Pittsfield barn

Peter Bell was helping a friend paint his barn

PITTSFIELD, Mass. (AP) — Authorities say a man from Pittsfield has died after falling about 25 feet while helping to paint a friend’s barn Wednesday.

The Pittsfield Fire Department identified the victim as Peter E. Bell, a former director of the city’s Boys & Girls Club and a coach of area youth sports teams.

The Berkshire Eagle reports that Bell was reportedly conscious and having trouble breathing as first responders prepared to bring him from the Churchill Street barn to Berkshire Medical Center.

Witnesses told the fire department that a loose nail hammered into a board Bell had thrown from the second-story barn door caught his clothing and pulled him out.

He is survived by his wife and three children.
