DA wants UMass rape suspects tried together

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. (AP) — Prosecutors say four men charged with raping a University of Massachusetts student in her Amherst dorm room in October 2012 should be tried together.

The Northwestern district attorney’s office filed a motion in Hampshire Superior Court seeking to join the cases of Adam Liccardi, Caleb Womack, Emmanuel Bile Jr. and Justin King. A hearing on the motion is scheduled for Wednesday.

Prosecutors say the state wants one trial, in part, to avoid having to convene four juries and recall the same witnesses four times. All defendants face identical charges based on identical evidence.

A lawyer for one defendant tells The Daily Hampshire Gazette he wants the hearing postponed.

The suspects were not UMass students, but knew the woman. They are free on bail after pleading not guilty. Their lawyers say the sex was consensual.
