NEW YORK (CNN) – Brushing and flossing your teeth should be a part of your daily routine. That’s because tooth decay can cause all kinds of problems including abscesses and inflammation in the body that can lead to heart disease.
We all know that dental hygiene is extremely important, but sometimes our brushing habits could do more harm than good.
“We recommend that you brush your teeth for 2 minutes, with a light to a medium amount of force,” said Dr. Youssef Obeid.
Whether it’s electric or manual, it is very important to brush correctly and regularly.
“What we recommend for a toothbrush is a soft or ultra soft, you know. We try to stay away from using a medium or a hard tooth brush nowadays because it will cause some damage for your own actual teeth,” Dr. Obeid continued.
Electric does have its benefits, however.
“People have a tendency to brush too hard, or too fast. That’s why sometimes the electric toothbrush will help you because it will give you the right amount of time, and will tell you if you are pushing too hard,” said Dr. Obeid.
In the end, the message is simple, the best way to protect your teeth from cavities and from gum disease is still brushing your teeth.
