SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – 22News and WWLP.com brought you live coverage of Bishop Mitchell Rozanski’s installation Tuesday afternoon.
Bishop Mitchell Rozanski was installed as the 9th Bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Springfield. The ceremony at St. Michael’s Cathedral in Springfield was a symbolic act. Bishop Rozanski officially became the Catholic leader of western Massachusetts in June when Pope Francis chose him to replace retiring Bishop Timothy McDonnell.
“When I landed at the airport and he met me, he said you don’t know how glad I am to see you,” said Rozanski.
Cardinal Sean O’Malley, the Archbishop of Boston spoke on behalf of Bishop Rozanski. “i was happy to hear that Archbishop Laurie so sorry to lose him, that’s a very good sign,” said Cardinal O’Malley.
Bishop Rozanski is fairly young, he just turned 56 years old this month. He’s from Baltimore, he’s Polish. but has focused on the Latino Community in the ministry. There are about 230,000 Catholics in western Massachusetts.
“I am both humbled and honored to serve as your Bishop. I look very much forward to sharing with you God’s beauty in this beloved Diocese of Springfield,” said Rozanski.
