Pre-order ahead of tax free holiday

Sales tax holiday for items less than $2,500.

WEST SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP)- In just a few days Massachusetts residents will have the chance to save a little cash when they shop. 22News found out why some shoppers have already got a jump start on some big purchases.

As stores get ready for the upcoming sales tax free weekend, many shoppers are doing some prep work too.

The sales tax free holiday will be this coming weekend, the 16th and 17th that’s when you will get a chance to buy without paying the state’s 6.25% sales tax.

22News spoke to Contractor’s Home Appliances, a business in West Springfield, who said the sales tax holiday has been a successful boost to summer sales in years past. President of the store Brian Zippin also said that so far this year their rush of pre-orders makes them think the upcoming weekend will also be a busy one.

“The traffic this year has been really steady and very good. We are expecting a really big weekend. I would say its a little ahead of where it was last year, but we are having a lot of activity during the week, whether it’s by phone calls or even people walking in and asking questions,” Zippin said.

The sales tax free is only good for items that cost less than $2,500. It’s also important you know that the tax break does not apply to gas, electricity, cars, or meals.

The sales tax holiday was voted through by lawmakers less than two weeks ago as part of the state’s economic development bill. It won’t be official until it is signed by Governor Patrick. The deadline for that is this Thursday.
