TUCSON, Ariz. (KVOA)Two women crawled under a Border Patrol truck to prevent a man from being detained Sunday.

Around 2:45 p.m., Tucson Police stopped the man for making an improper right turn near 22nd Street and Columbus Boulevard, according to Sgt. Chris Widmer.

The man told police he was in the country illegally, so they called Border Patrol, according to Widmer.

Dozens of protesters quickly gathered around the traffic stop, and 2 women crawled under a Border Patrol vehicle to prevent it from driving away.

Raul Alcaraz Ochoa is with the Protection Network Coalition and joined the protest.

“That is racial profiling,” he said. “If it had been any other person, this wouldn’t have happened if he was white. So because he is brown, and he is a Latino, there was reasonable suspicion. And they called Border Patrol.”

Ochoa used the same tactic twice last year. In February and July, he crawled under a Border Patrol vehicle to prevent an arrest.

Tucson Police say officers have no discretion because of Arizona’s immigration law, SB 1070.

They say they are required to verify citizenship.
