Police are looking for a small grey Honda that was observed close to where the shooting took place

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – A murder investigation Saturday night in Springfield marking the city’s 9th homicide.

Springfield Police Sgt. John Delaney told 22News 26-year-old Lamar P. Kelly, of Springfield, was shot and killed near William DeBerry Elementary School.

Delaney said around 5 o’clock Saturday night officers responded to a “Shotspotter” activation, and found Kelly with a gunshot wound on the walkway between Monroe Street and Union Street.

The officers performed first aid and assisted EMTs getting him to a local hospital. The victim was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.

Detectives processing the scene discovered a large bag of white powder weighing 53 grams on Kelly. The bag is consistent with cocaine. Investigators determined that this was not a random shooting and is possibly drug/gang related.
