NEW LONDON, Conn. (AP) — A Connecticut contractor who helped build a home in Voluntown on the reality show “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” has been sentenced to four months in prison for a 2011 arson at his own business.

Bruce Hayn of Colchester was sentenced Thursday. The judge said the sentence should serve as a message to the community and a deterrent against crime. Prosecutors had recommended two years.

Hayn was accused of setting a fire at his wood pellet business, Shur Fire Energy. He pleaded no contest in April to a reduced charge of third-degree arson.

In arguing for leniency, his attorney said Hayn has “lived a life of charitable giving” and that “his heart is his gift.”

He also faces four years of probation and must attempt to pay restitution.
