SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – One man is dead after a shooting and possible carjacking that occurred in the area of an Interstate 91 on-ramp early Friday morning.
The I-91 North exit 9 on-ramp off of Main Street by the North End Bridge was closed for about three hours as police investigated.
Lt. Thomas Maccini of the Springfield Police Department told 22News that Springfield police officers were sent to the shooting that occurred in the area of McDonald’s on Main Street after their Shotspotter activation system picked up the noise of gunfire.
44 year-old Jose M. Gonzalez of Chicopee was found shot once in the abdomen during what was initially reported as a carjacking, Lt. Maccini said. Gonzalez was taken to Baystate Medical Center where he later died, according to a state police press release.
Troopers from the Springfield Barracks, the Hampden County State Police Detective Unit, the MSP K-9 Section and Crime Scene Services Unit took over the shooting investigation and interviews with witnesses because the site of the shooting fell into state police jurisdiction.
A short time later West Springfield Police stopped a vehicle matching the description of that belonging to Gonzazlez, that had crashed into a traffic island and had been abandoned on Beauview Terrace. Initial reports that a man who was arrested on outstanding warrants unrelated to the shooting near the abandoned SUV may have fled on foot from the car have been proven inaccurate. The man is not connected to the SUV or the shooting. No arrests have been made in connection to this shooting.
The ramp from Plainfield Street to Route 91 north in Springfield was closed shortly following this shooting, but reopened around 6:00 a.m.
