“Ice Bucket Challenge” used to raise money for ALS

ALS affects nerve cells in the brain

WILBRAHAM, Mass. (WWLP) – You may have seen people dousing themselves with ice water on social media this week. It’s not because they’re hot, it’s to raise money and awareness for a good cause.

On Friday, Dave Bennett in Wilbraham participated in the “Ice Bucket Challenge” in honor of his wife Linda who has ALS, also called “Lou Gehrig’s Disease.” ALS is a progressive neurodegenerative disease.

The Massachusetts ALS Association told 22News they’ve made well over 10 thousand dollars in just two days, and that’s just in Massachusetts.

“To create awareness we’ll do anything to get the word around that this is an underfunded disease and there’s a lot of research necessary to help folks down the road with this,” said Bennett.

ALS affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord and eventually leads to death. To read about the challenge or donate, Click Here.
