Guardsman killed in I-95 crash identified

HARTFORD, Conn. (WTNH) — Military authorities on Friday identified the National Guardsman killed in a crash on I-95 in New York as a 43-year-old Bridgeport man.

Staff Sgt. Ronald Patterson Jr. dies when the light medium tactical vehicle he was riding in crashed and overturned at Exit 21 in Rye, New York. Seriously injured in the same crash was Sgt. 1st Class Kayla Anne Downey, 31, of Shelton. She is being treated for her injuries at the hospital.

Both belong to A Company, 192nd Engineer Battalion, based in Stratford. Connecticut. The Connecticut National Guard said both served in Operation Iraqi Freedom and received numerous awards.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of Staff Sgt. Patterson and with Sgt. 1st Class Downey and her family,” said Maj. Gen. Thaddeus J. Martin, commander of the Connecticut National Guard. “The full resources of the Connecticut National Guard will be available to the families and fellow Soldiers of Patterson and Downey who have been affected by this tragedy.”

Military authorities and New York state police are still investigating the cause of the crash.
