Big back-up on Pike before I-495 exit

State Police say blame 7-mile backup on Friday Cape traffic

WESTBOROUGH, Mass. (WWLP) – The eastbound lanes of the Massachusetts Turnpike were backed up for miles before the I-495 interchange in Westborough Friday night.

A caller contacted 22News to say relatives had measured the backup from the other side of the Pike, and found it to be seven miles of gridlock.

The MassDOT website indicates traffic is moving slower than 25 mph eastbound between Shrewsbury, Exit 11 and Westborough, Exit 11-A.

22News contacted State Police Media Relations to find out what’s causing the prolonged problems on the Pike. Lt Daniel Richard told 22News State Police were attributing the backup to Friday night Summer time Cape Cod traffic. He said it had been a problem all afternoon, and had continued past the evening commute.

People heading east on the MassPike should expect delays in central Massachusetts until later on Friday night.
