(NBC News) President Obama has signed the Veterans Access, Choice and Accountability Act into law.

The legislation, which passed both houses of Congress with overwhelming support, is designed to improve access to care and reduce the long waits many veterans have experienced when trying to see a doctor.

The act provides resources for the Department of Veterans Affairs to hire more physicians and makes it easier for veterans to see doctors in community-based, non-Veterans Administration facilities.

The law came in response to reports earlier this year documenting scheduling problems and treatment delays at Veterans Administration health clinics. An internal investigation found that 57,000 veterans across the country waited more than 90 days for an appointment, and 64,000 who requested care never even got onto a waiting list.
