NJ man gets 4 years in jail for Mass. assaults

SALEM, Mass. (AP) — A New Jersey man has been sentenced to four years in jail for what authorities called random attacks on three fellow students at a Massachusetts college he attended.

Twenty-year-old Dillon DeStefano of River Vale, New Jersey, apologized to the victims during his sentencing in Salem Superior Court on Tuesday and denied the assaults at Endicott College were part of a “knockout” random assault game. He pleaded guilty to assault and witness intimidation charges.

DeStefano suggested the assaults were in response to “slights’ and “insults,” and blamed his actions on alcohol and performance-enhancing drugs. Prosecutors said the assaults were random.

The attacks on the freshmen students left one with a broken jaw, another with a broken eye socket and a third with a minor injury. DeStefano no longer attends the school.
