Springfield Jazz Fest to collect socks for Homeless

Free concert may re-define the term "sock hop"

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – A free concert that may re-define the term “sock hop” will be held in Springfield’s Court Square this Saturday.

People who attend the Springfield Jazz and Roots Fest are asked to bring a pair or pairs of new socks for Mercy Hospital’s Healthcare for the homeless program. All sizes are needed. Many of the homeless are children.

Mercy’s Community Health provides a new pair of socks for any of its homeless patients who receive foot care, either because of poorly fitting shoes, blisters or worse.

“We service about 2,300 to 2,400 people a year so we’re always in need of socks. We will purchase them if need be. People donate them,” Community Health executive director Doreen Fadus told 22News.

Concert attendees are asked to bring a pair or pairs of new socks for Mercy Medical Center’s “Healthcare for the Homeless” program to the Springfield Jazz and Roots Fest this Saturday from 11:30 a.m. until 9:30 p.m. Saturday.
