Mass. military bases no longer asked to shelter immigrant children

CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP)- Governor Deval Patrick has announced Massachusetts will not shelter unaccompanied children crossing the nation’s southern border.

Health and Human Services e-mailed Governor Patrick just before 5 o’clock Tuesday night, saying fewer Central American children are crossing the border into our country, and that the federal government no longer needs Westover Air Reserve Base and Joint Base Cape Cod to operate as shelters.

Glenn Kershaw, of Mashpee told 22News, “We just can’t afford it we can’t we’re good nation a generous nation but you know we can only do so much and we must close our Borders and get a grip on it.”

Federal officials said the situation at the border is still fluid and there remains “substantial uncertainty” about future numbers of unaccompanied children.
