EEE found in mosquitoes trapped in Freetown, Mass.

EW BEDFORD, Mass. (WPRI) – Mosquitoes infected with the Eastern equine encephalitis (EEE) virus were recently found in Freetown, Massachusetts, state health officials announced Tuesday.

According to the Massachusetts Dept. of Health, the mosquitoes were trapped on the east side of Freetown. In response to the findings, the health department said it will conduct targeted ground spraying in New Bedford beginning Thursday.

This week’s round of spraying will take place between 2 a.m. and sunrise Thursday and will target the following areas:

  • Fort Taber
  • Brooklawn Park
  • Buttonwood Park
  • Hazelwood Park
  • Riverside Park
  • Poor Farm Area
  • Clasky Park
  • Ashley Park
  • Ben Rose Field
  • Industrial Park

Health officials urge residents who live in the vicinity of targeted areas should close their windows prior to the spraying.
