Springfield residents discuss street safety with police

Tuesday was "America's National Night Out Against Crime"

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Thousands of people across western Massachusetts had a chance Tuesday night to get to know their local police officers.

The East Springfield Neighborhood Council was one of about 10,000 communities across the United States that participated in “America’s National Night Out Against Crime.”

Dozens of East Springfield neighbors enjoyed food and music and an opportunity to meet with police officers who patrol the streets of East Springfield.

Organizers told 22News the event benefits both the neighbors and the police. Community police liaison Kathleen Brown said, “They had an opportunity to talk to community members and to really touch and feel the issues that the neighbors were having but also eat with them and play with them.”

The East Springfield Neighborhood Council has been participating in the National Night Out for 18 years.
