Police talk to residents about drug prevention in Amherst

Tuesday was "America's National Night Out Against Crime"

AMHERST, Mass. (WWLP) – In Hampshire County, Hadley and Amherst residents gathered at the University of Massachusetts to strengthen neighborhood spirit and police community partnerships.

The focus for the Amherst Night Out was crime and drug prevention, and generating support for anti-crime efforts in Hampshire County.

Residents were encouraged to stop and talk with their public safety officers in a relaxed atmosphere. “To have these positive relations.  Not being scared of your police officer.  They’re here to protect us,” said Jasmine Abreu, a senior at UMass.

Several agencies were represented at Tuesday night’s’ National Night Out in Amherst including the Amherst and Hadley Police Departments, Amherst Fire and the UMass Environmental Health and Safety.

More than 10,000 communities across the United States participated in “America’s National Night Out Against Crime” Tuesday.
